La Source Trip Report
November 1994
We just returned
from all-inclusive resort in Grenada, LaSOURCE. We enjoyed it very much. In
addition to all features that all other a/i's offer, LS includes spa treatments
and health program. We especially liked relaxation techniques, stress
management, tai-chi, Japanese meditation and yoga. The guy who does it is, Jean
Pierre is superb and he is somewhat a healer.
Grenada's people
are very friendly. As soon we got from the airplane, we were met by the sounds
of the local band. Also, tourist reps were giving away little souvenirs and info
on the island. They had tourism awareness month, and try to attract tourists,
especially Americans. Majority of the tourists are from Europe, mostly British.
BA flies directly from LON. AA has 1 flight per day from SJU, and BWIA flies
from MIA. We flew from JFK to SJU and from there to GND. After customs we were
greeted by LaSource rep. We were whisked - no less - to a white stretch limo
along with 3 other people and in 5 minutes we were at the LS entrance.
The grounds (40
hilly acres) are gorgeous, and resort will be 1 year old in Dec. The work is
still continued on landscaping, and they will build a gazebo up in the mountains
for meditation. The architecture and decor is British colonial village. The
Great house where restaurant is has time on clock tower 5:10p - a cocktail hour
for British colonials. The name is inspired by the painting LaSource of French
artist Jean Ingres (we saw original in Paris, Musee D'Orsay - but the original
is nude, and in LS they 'draped' the figure..) A female figure pouring the
wine means beginning of life. You can see it on the decorations everywhere and
in the tiles outside. To ensu re total relaxation, there are no TV's in the
resort.
Rooms are
great, superbly decorated in British colonial style, and bathrooms are huge and
marble. However, bathrooms sink was a little bit high and bath tub has too much
marble around it, and you have to watch your step getting in and out. They have
dryers, of course, and robes. All rooms have fairly
good size balconies facing
the beach. We had oceanfront room. Robes are
for wearing to the treatments, because some oils might stain your
clothes.
Beach is
beautiful, but it is a bit hilly. Also, beach is not shallow, a couple of feet
out and it is deep. Main beach is gorgeous, with finesand. But it is not on a
bay but on open ocean. There is quite a surf, especially 2 days waves were
large. It did not present problem for us, but for non-swimmers could be a minus.
If you are not afraid of surf, it is great for swimming, or you can use 2 huge
pools. LS has 2 the most gorgeous pools we've ever seen. One is 4 foot deep and
huge, another is deeper. They are connected by waterfall. Water was warm but I
don't think it was heated. The pools and hot tub next to it are adjacent to the
terrace where breakfast, lunch, tea are served.
There is plenty
of shade on the beach. All rooms face the ocean and have fairly good balcony
with 2 chairs and table. We had our continental breakfast there. Even first
floor has balcony, and there is no direct walk from the room. You have to walk
out from the front door. Our room was oceanfront - the first building.
Bodyguards are
taking guest for jog and walk. For golfers they carry clubs. Some of them
perform duties of social directors, entertain guests at night and just mingle
with guests. They are very enthusiastic, bright young people.
During the day
there are regular activities like dance classes. There was beer drinking contest
once. We did water aerobics almost every day and enjoyed it, 3 hours of
different relaxation classes, treatments plus meals and beach - that did it.
Dinner was late for us (7:30). By the time it was finished, was late, we spent
some time at piano bar. Pianist was playing every night. We met students from
Grenada medical school (the same school which Reagan went to protect) there.
There are still Americans studying there. There was every night a different
local band playing on the terrace, but because of mosquitoes it was impossible
to stay long. We did had enough strength to crawl to our room and... sleep. LS
does not have disco and karaoke.
Food was
excellent and healthy, with 1 or 2 selection of lighter choice. Breakfast
(British style), is buffet or you can order cont breakfast in your room. Lunches
were the best, very creative, but dinners were good too, very well prepared and
presented. But, there is only 1 restaurant for dinner and it starts at 7:30p. We
are early eaters and did not have a problem, but we saw people who came at 8:30
had to wait (they sit you at the piano bar next door and will call). Service was
good, and very attentive. Except 1 time when they mixed up our order. Afternoon
tea is from 4 to 6 pm with cucumber sandwiches, pastries and peanut butter
sandwiches (for Americans?)
Buffet
breakfasts were the same every day: one station with porridge (farina), cereals,
nuts, muesli. Another - tropical fruits, yogurt, juices, poached eggs, fried
eggs, potatoes (roasted, not fried), roasted tomatoes (British! ), ham,
sausages, bacon. 3rd station were croissants, muffins, danish, jams (marmalade,
guava jam, nutmeg jam), butter, etc. There were fairly big selection of juices.
Tea, coffee. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 10:30. After that fruit and juices are
available, along with bar drinks.
Lunches: We
liked them the most. Very creative, international cuisine. One day was oriental
buffet, with sushi. Another was Mexican/South American, it was too spicy.
Salads were creative, and interesting vegetarian dishes. As for
meat, I liked veal scnitzel, chicken tandoori. Paella was also great. Deserts
were galore, and very tasty.
Dinner dishes
were very well prepared. But it is only one restaurant and selection was: 4 of
each: appetizer or salad, main entree and dessert. I had lamb curry with rice
pilaf, another time leg of lamb with vegetables, twice grilled tuna on a bed of
mashed garlic potatoes with cream sauce, artichokes and capers, was very good.
Once I had oriental duck and it was not the best.
There are 2
bars with drinks available all day and evening but not 24 hours. One is terrace
bar and another - piano bar. They also make great non-alcoholic drinks like
banana daiquiri, fruit punch, and others. The atmosphere was very relaxed,
sometimes subdued.
One time
in a week there is manager's cocktail party, as everywhere. Staff is very eager
to please, and Grenadians are very friendly . Our room was always cleaned
up by 10am, and the bed turned down after dinner. They give you every night 2
beach towels, and you use them during the day. If you need extra, stop by at
housekeeping station and towels were always available. The same with robes. As
for location, make sure to ask room closer to the beach (oceanfront, it is more
expensive but worth it). The farthest rooms (oceanview) are also on the hill and
people complained that it is hard to walk up and down all the time.
Entertainment:
Not much. There are 2 bars - the terrace bar and piano bar. Oh, forgot to
mention: if you want drinks on the beach, there are flags. All you have to do is
stick it in the sand and the waiter will come to take your order. Of course, it
is island time and if you are really thirsty, you would walk to the bar and get
it yourself faster. The bars are open all day but not 24 hours. They serve wine
with dinner including champagne in addition to all drinks.
Tours are extra
from a tour company which has an office at LaSource. 4 hour trip was $35 per
person up to 8 people. We took private tour - got a car with a driver/guide
(local taxi) for $20 per hour for a car. And he showed us St. George, took us up
to mountain to see rainforest and waterfall. It was beautiful. Island is very
pretty. People try to sell you things, but a "No thank you" will do. They
don't insist. In Jamaica they are more pushy, I think..
If you are
looking for a R&R in a beautiful place, you will like it. But
not too much of a
entertainment and parties.
I thought I covered most of the
questions. Hope you find this info useful. Questions?
