Argentina & Antarctica
A 12-day expedition
program on board the MS Nordkapp, starting at $4,299.
DEPARTURE DATES: February 28
- March 11, 2007
Day 1: Depart the U.S.
Depart from the U.S. on your
overnight flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Day 2: Buenos Aires
When arriving at the Ezeiza
International Airport - Argentina you will be met by our
local meet & greet personnel; transfers will be provided to
take you to your hotel in the home city of the tango.
Airport / Hotel transfer will consist of an orientation tour
of the city during which relevant information on the area
will be given. The rest of the day is at your disposal to
explore the "Paris of South America."
Day 3: Buenos Aires/Ushuaia
After breakfast you will be
transferred to the airport for your flight to Ushuaia, (4,5
hours) during which a light lunch will be served. Ushuaia is
reckoned to be the most southerly city in the world and is
situated on Tierra del Fuego Island south of the Magellan
strait. Upon arrival, the transfer to the MS Nordkapp will
include a short orientation tour of Ushuaia before
embarkation. In the evening we’ll shape course for the Drake
Passage and Antarctica.
Day 4-5: Drake Passage
The Drake Passage connects the
southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
While we cross this stretch of water to Antarctica, a series
of lectures will be held on board on topics related to
Antarctica’s history and wildlife, as well as the Guidelines
for Visitors to Antarctica.
The Antarctica Treaty has made this continent into an area
with no military activity and subjected to its authority.
Tourism in the form provided by the company is helping to
ensure that Antarctica will remain pristine. This is
enhanced through our on board educational program in which
we aim to prepare our gests for this unique experience and
enable them to make the most of their days on this vast
continent.
We will be heading for the Northern-most tip of the
continent, the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland
Islands; hoping to arrive on the afternoon of day 5.
Day 5-9: Antarctica
That vast, white, exposed
continent – is almost the same size as North America.
Weather, ice and local conditions are crucial to what we
will be able to experience here and will decide on our
program for the next days.
We hope to visit Deception Island with spectacular views of
the volcano's caldera paying a visit to Whaler’s Bay. Whale
spotting is also common here from mid December onwards. It
may also happen that we cruise trough the narrow
iceberg-lined Lemaire Channel known for its natural beauty.
We also hope to be visiting the breathtaking Neumayer
Channel with its majestic cliffs and Port Lockroy, known for
the British Station which vas turned into a museum by the UK
Antarctic Heritage Trust in 1996.
If weather and ice conditions permitting we may try
navigating through the Antarctic Sound, making our way
towards the Erebus and Terror Gulf, gateway to the Weddell
Sea. On our journey in Antarctic we may also try to call on
places like Half Moon Island to visit its Chinstrap penguin
colony and Cuverville Island to visit its Gentoo penguin
colony.
Our departure from Antarctica will occur in between the
evening of day 8 and morning of day 9, depending of the
weather conditions of the Drake Passage and the discretion
of our vessel's Master.
Day 9-10: At Sea
During our crossing, we will sum
up the Antarctic topics. The distance from the Antarctic
Peninsula to Cape Horn, southern tip of South America, is of
approximately 800 kilometres, or around 35 hours of sailing
time with good weather conditions. This is a unique crossing
that few ever get to experience.
Day 11: Ushuaia/Buenos Aires
In the morning we will reach the
Argentinean city of Ushuaia again. After breakfast, transfer
to the airport. On the flight to Buenos Aires, a light lunch
will be served. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight.
Day 12: Return to the U.S
Transfer to the airport for your
flight back to the U.S.
