Lake Baikal

Glorious Sea, the Sacred Baikal....

Lake Baikal was known as the "North Sea" in historical Chinese texts and for Russians it is a “glorious sea” until now. Very little was known about the lake, until the Trans-Siberian railway was built between 1896 and 1902.

Lake Baikal in Eastern Siberia is not only the world’s deepest lake but also its oldest. At a maximum depth of 1,700 meters and an age of at least 25 million years, it contains 20 percent of the world’s unfrozen freshwater reserves. The place, where everybody would like to go at least once in their life time.

The itineraries you will find are just the ideas. All private travel will be customized upon your specific interests, dates and hotel choices.

We can help you to see this wonder of the world, walk those roads, still less travelled, if you are ready for the nice, but simple accommodation and transportation. Nature – will be the main luxury on the tip

Highlights:

Explore unique Museum of Baikal

See the ethnographical sites, which will help you to understand the local nations

Enjoy Shaman folklore show – touch the spirits of nomadic nations

Try Shaman lunch for a change

See locals, talk to them, share their homes, life and foods

We recommend: minimum 7 days stay. The flights from Moscow or St Pete to Irkutsk are daily, about 4hrs. The time difference with Moscow is 4 hrs.

About the tour: See the city Irkutsk on the day of arrival. Morning check out and off to Bolshie Koty by the ferry, tiny village on the lake. Spend a night in a private chalet in this pristine place with maybe less than a 100 villagers. Tranquility, the vastness and grandeur of the scenery will surround you. Next day, by the ferry get back to Listvyanka, the biggest city type settlement on the lake. Visit the Museum of Baikal, have a lunch in the numerous cafes with the fish ‘omul’ , the local specialty. Sail by boat (2,5hours) on ‘this glorious sea’ from Listvyanka to the village Khujir, on Olkhon Island. Explore Khujir, enjoy the shaman show and shaman lunch with local Buryat people. Drive further into the island to check into the only hostel on the island, At Nikitas. Nice and friendly place. Enjoy couple days on the island: fish, trek, hike or just relax and think of eternity. Back to Irkutsk by the public/or private boat. Driving back with the private vehicle takes about 6 hours.
