Germany

How great was Frederick II, whom Maria Theresa called “the evil man” and Voltaire “Frederic le Grand”?
He clearly was not thrifty! He created the most expensive and probably most beautiful buildings of all Prussian kings, cast out his wife and fought innumerable wars. For him, tolerance, science and the enlightenment were only means to turn “The Arabian Desert” of Brandenburg into a flourishing landscape.
Day
1: Berlin:
Arrival in Berlin. Walk through the historical centre of Berlin. In the Unter
den Linden boulevard you will see an equestrian statue of Frederick II. The
Catholic cathedral of St Hedwig is next – as the first Catholic church in
Prussia it is evidence of lived tolerance. You will also see the state opera
that is witness to the king´s musical interests.
Day
2: Potsdam: In the morning you
will visit Sans Souci Palace. No other palace is as closely linked to the
character of Frederick the Great as Sans Souci. The name “Sans Souci” –
without worries – is to be understood as the king´s wish and motto. After a
short stroll through the park of Sans Souci, you will reach the New Palace. It
is the last palace that Frederick the Great had built in his park. In the
evening you will be expected at the former UFA studios in Potsdam Babelsberg,
where the musical Frederick II is performed. (surcharge, play season June –
September 2012)
Day 3: Neuruppin and Rheinsberg:
This day will take you north to the Neuruppin area. In Neuruppin the young
Frederick was in command of his own regiment from 1732 to 1740. Short transfer
to Rheinsberg. It was here that Frederick II spent the happiest days of his life
as Crown Prince. Numerous works of art adorn the rooms of the palace and invite
you on a journey back in time to the 18th century. Late-evening
return to Berlin.
