UNESCO World Heritage Site Tour

from the North to the Baltic Sea

 

On this six-day trip through northern Germany, you get to know four of the 33 German World Heritage Sites. Everywhere you encounter the traces of the Hanseatic League, that once mighty medieval league of towns. The cities are characterized by remarkably well-preserved city centers and their unique and distinctive architecture. Also you will visit the Wadden Sea, which is the habitat for many animal and plant species.

Day 1.  Hamburg - Bremen

Arrival in Hamburg. To get a first impression of the Hanseatic City, you get to know the most important sights at a guided tour. Afterwards you travel to Bremen. Possibility a night walking tour through the city. Overnight stay in Bremen.

 

Day 2. BremenWadden Sea

After breakfast you start today's excursion to the Wadden Sea, you will be enchanted by the landscape that is created new every single day by the tides. The Wadden Sea is one of the world's largest and most important tidal wetlands and has a global importance as resting area for migratory birds. Along the North Sea coast you will explore the area and with luck you can catch a glance at seals. Overnight stay in Bremen.

 Day 3. Bremen - Lübeck

 

After breakfast you will get to know Bremen by a city tour. The City Council reflects the development of the Hanseatic League. It was built at the beginning of the 15th Century in the Gothic style and renovated in the early 17th Century in the style of the Weser Renaissance. In front of the City Hall, you are welcomed by the "Roland", which stands for the freedom and independence of the town. In the Schnoor district with its old streets and houses, you can think back in the 17 and 18 Century. In the afternoon continuation of the journey and overnight stay in Lübeck.

 


Day 4. Lübeck und Wismar

Lübeck is the first city in northern Europe, where the entire old town was declared as World Heritage Site. You will visit the medieval city center on the Old Town Island, with the seven towers of the 5 large churches, the town hall and the landmark of the city, the Holsten Gate. Afterwards you will be taken on a boat trip to one of the oldest and most traditional German resorts Travemünde. In the afternoon continuation to Wismar. The UNESCO has included the towns of Stralsund and Wismar together in the World Heritage list, as representative examples of the cultural heritage of the Hanseatic League. In Wismar, you can still see the buildings from the period of Swedish rule over the city in the 17th and 18 Century. Overnight stay in Wismar.

 

Day 5. Wismar – Kühlungsborn - Bad Doberan – Stralsund

From Kühlungsborn you make a trip with the steam train "Molli" via Heiligendamm, the first German seaside resort and summer residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg, to Bad Doberan. Here you visit the Doberan Minster. In 1171 cistercian monks built their home town here. Continuation to Stralsund. On a city tour you will enjoy the unique charm of the old Hanseatic city of Stralsund, which now belongs to the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk to the market with the lovely front of City Hall from the 14th Century. The churches of St. Mary's and Nicolai, which always belong to a Hanseatic city complete the walk. Overnight stay in Stralsund.

 

Day 6. Stralsund – departure or connection program

After breakfast, departure or you extend your stay.
