Built as a palace during the 12th century in Ravello, Italy, on the Amalfi Coast, this property became a hotel after World War II. The hotel closed in the 1970s but reopened in 1997 after a $20 million refurbishment. Past guests have included Roberto Rossellini, Ingrid Bergman, Placido Domingo and Gore Vidal.
The hotel's 38 air-conditioned rooms and five suites - most with hot tubs - are decorated with 18-th and 19th-century furniture. All suites have seaviews, while rooms have sea, garden or mountain views. The property's Rossellinis restaurant has one Michelin star; less formal dining is in Caffe della Arte, and there is 24-hour room service. A rooftop sun terrace has hydromassage plunge pools, and a swimming pool is scheduled to open this spring.
Nearby attractions include Villa Rufolo, Villa Cimbrone, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Roman ruins at Pompeii and Ercolano, Mount Vesuvius, and the villages of Positano, Amalfi and Praiano.
