| Description: The Red Lion is possibly the longest running purpose built hotel in England. Built over 750 years ago to house the draughtsmen working on the nearby Cathedral, the hotel, with its world famous creeper clad courtyard, has been in the same family ownership for nearly 100 years. During recent times many modern facilities have been incorporated within the framework of the traditional style and ambience of the orginal building. Throughout the hotel there is a fine collection of antiques affording guests an interesting insight into the past. Look out especially for the many clocks - including "Parliament Clocks", and, in particular, the "Skeleton and Organ Clock" in the reception hall. The restaurant has a delightful ambience with its much admired china collection and "wattle and daub" wall dating from around 1220. Renowned for its traditional English and continental cusine, the chefs pride themselves on the standard of food served, and, as in all areas of the hotel, the service is both friendly and attentive. The wine cellar is comprehensive and guests can be assured of a fine wine to complement any meal. The lounge with open log fire and the bar both happily retain memories of the past. The lounge is an ideal place to relax and enjoy coffee or a light snack. The bar is a friendly meeting place serving a variety of real ales. AA "3 Star". Location: In the center of Salisbury, only a short walk to the Cathedral. Room Bedding: 54 bedrooms individually decorated with both charm and character. With all the facilities which the discerning guest requires, such as remote control color TV, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryers, they are perfect for the overnight traveller or for longer stays. For special occasions there are two antique four poster bedded rooms and two spacious suites overlooking the wonderful courtyard with its vine and flower beds. Activities: Salisbury is the ideal place from which to visit the attractions of the South of England and, of course, Salisbury itself, with its medieval buildings, market square, museum and the beautiful Cathedral surrounded by its magnificient Close. The Cathedral treasures include an original copy of the Magna Carta and England's oldest working clock |
