1. Embark Yorktown Clipper in
Juneau
Tour begins: Juneau Airport. A transfer
is provided to the dock where you may embark the
Yorktown Clipper
starting at 4:00 PM. Accessible only by air or water, Juneau is the
most remote state capital and is a walker's delight. Meet your fellow
travelers at dinner this evening; the Yorktown Clipper departs for
Skagway.
•
2. Skagway / White Pass and Yukon Railroad
Skagway is a lively Gay-Nineties town that served as a gateway to the
Yukon during the gold rush of 1898. Its history is preserved today in
the town's wooden sidewalks, original frame buildings and colorful
saloons. Arrive early morning and board a restored 1890 parlor car of
the famous White Pass & Yukon Railroad. Travel the same route as that
of the gold rushers, riding along the narrow gauge tracks built at the
height of the Klondike Gold Rush; view Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration
Point and Dead Horse Gulch prior to returning to Skagway. Explore the
town at leisure, or perhaps take an optional helicopter sightseeing
tour with a glacier landing; limited seating is available
(approximately $150 per person). Join the Captain, the officers and
your Tauck Directors for the Captain's reception and dinner this
evening.
•
3. Haines / River Rafting Adventure
The Yorktown Clipper
docks at Haines, with the jagged "Cathedral Peaks" of the Chilkat
Mountains as a backdrop, and the salmon-filled Chilkoot Inlet lapping
at its shores. The highlight of your visit will be rafting through the
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where you will be able to see America's
national emblem, the American Bald Eagle. As you silently float along
the river, eagles can be seen perched in the shoreline trees; be on
the lookout for bears and wolves that roam the riverbanks! This float
trip is certain to be one of your most memorable cruise experiences!
Return to Haines and enjoy an opportunity to visit the Alaska Indian
Arts Center or browse through the town's galleries. Set sail once
again this afternoon.
•
4. Explore Scenic Elfin Cove / 1/2 Day at
Sea
Enjoy an opportunity for some spectacular wildlife viewing today.
Arrive today in scenic Elfin Cove; the tiny fishing village, whose
summer population rises to 30 people, is nestled along the
tree-crowned shoreline with beautiful views. Later on,
Yorktown Clipper
departs for one of the world's most beautiful destinations, the
wildlife-rich Glacier Bay, cruising through magnificent landscapes.
•
5. Glacier Bay Cruising – Day at Sea
Behold glacial ice cliffs of white and blue rising from the sea!
Glaciers are moving rivers of ice that form high and terminate at the
sea. When these great tidewater glaciers "calve," sections of ice
crash to the water in spectacular fashion; it can be a thundering
spectacle. Yet amid this incredible icefield, the water still remains
remarkably calm – and the Captain brings your ship close-in for you to
see it all! As you cruise Glacier Bay, be sure to watch for wildlife
such as bears and mountain goats, or perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime
sighting of the enormous humpback whale!
•
6. Discover Sitka – Cultural Heritage and
Natural History
En route to Sitka, skirt the shores
north of Kelp Bay, Peril Strait and Whitestone Narrows. Sitka once
belonged to the Russians as part of their fur-trading empire that
extended to northern California. Visit the small, wood-framed St.
Michael's Cathedral, the center of the Russian Orthodox religion in
Alaska. View hawks and magnificent eagles up close at the Alaska
Raptor Rehabilitation Center, and see the totems at Sitka National
Historic Park. Time and weather permitting, you'll have a chance to
take an optional kayak adventure. Later today, the Yorktown
Clipper makes its way to the dramatic Tracy Arm Fjord.
•
7. Day at Sea – Frederick Sound / Tracy
Arm Fjord
Your ship enters Frederick Sound this morning; this magnificent
waterway is home to one of the largest populations of humpback whales
in Alaska. Spend the entire day at sea, enjoying the amenities of the
ship as you experience the panoramic scenery surrounding you. You
don't have to stay on the deck for wonderful viewing as the outside
word is always in sight from the window-lined observation lounge and
dining room, or you can do some wildlife spotting from your stateroom.
Cruise toward beautiful Tracy Arm Fjord; amidst towering grey cliffs
and tranquil turquoise water, you will be startled by the luminous
blues and greens of Sawyer Glaciers. The
Yorktown Clipper
arrives late this evening in Juneau.
8. Journey Home
Tour ends: Juneau Airport.
Disembark by 9:00 AM; fly home anytime. Transfers are provided to the
airport for all flights departing as early as 6:00 AM; allow a minimum
