Cape Cod & the Islands

America's history began along New England's rugged shores. Explore a rich maritime legacy beautifully preserved in the grey-weathered shingles of Cape Cod homes, dunes dotted with lighthouses, quaint harbors, rose-lined country roads and magnificent beaches. Cruise to legendary offshore islands, steeped in lore from whaling days; many sights have remained relatively unchanged.

  Full Itinerary

1. Arrive BostonCape Cod and the Islands
Tour begins: Sheraton Boston at 8:30 AM.
Welcome to an extraordinary one-week journey through the classic coastal landscapes of New England! Upon your arrival, travel to Plymouth, where the pilgrims first stepped ashore in 1620. Visit Plimoth Plantation, a restoration depicting the times, lifestyle, and crafts of 17th-century Plymouth, and see the famed Plymouth Rock. Travel across Cape Cod Canal for lunch on Falmouth Harbor prior to a ferry journey to the historic – and fashionable – island of Martha's Vineyard. Enjoy two nights in Edgartown, for centuries one of the most important whaling centers in New England, featuring old narrow streets and historic stately homes. Meals LD

2. Exploring the Vineyard
Much of Martha's Vineyard remains exactly as it was when the first European settlers arrived in the early 17th century. The island's resident population includes writers, artists, entertainers, lobstermen and fishermen who have a love affair with wind, waves, and privacy. This morning's sightseeing includes the towns of Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, salt sea marshes, beautiful sweeping beaches, and picturesque yacht harbors. The afternoon is spent at your leisure – enjoy the beach, play tennis, or relax amidst the rambling elegance of your charming hotel. Meals BD

3. Nantucket / Brewster
Depart Martha's Vineyard this morning for a 15-minute flight to scenic Nantucket Island, the "far away island." Surrounded by the warm clear waters of the Atlantic, Nantucket is a community whose original colonial New England atmosphere is virtually unchanged; over 300 years of history, art, architecture and legend reflect the long-past, but never-forgotten, whaling era. Take a sightseeing journey around the island, with time for lunch and browsing before returning to the Cape Cod mainland via passenger ferry. Arrive in the town of Brewster for a two-night stay at an oceanfront resort. Meals BD

4. Provincetown / Whale Watch
Travel to Provincetown along one of the most scenic parts of Cape Cod; visit the Cape Cod National Seashore and learn about the flora and fauna of this beautiful string of beaches. The waters near Provincetown host one of New England's largest whale populations; this afternoon take a guided whale-watching cruise to view these fascinating mammals in their natural habitat, weather permitting. Return to Brewster for dinner. Meals BD

5. Sandwich / Newport
Journey to the charming village of Sandwich, Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1639, it is the oldest town on the Cape, well-known for its glassware. Visit the Heritage Plantation, where a collection of Americana ranges from early American art and artifacts to horticulture and military history – including a 1912 carousel! Arrive in Newport, Rhode Island, one of New England's most delightful coastal cities, and a long-time favored vacation site of affluent socialites and yachting enthusiasts. Buildings in Newport reflect different eras of prosperity, from the colonial days of the 17th and 18th centuries to masterpieces of the Gilded Age. Visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2004, as well as Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in America. Explore the "Ten-Mile Drive," which boasts homes and exquisite estates from the early 1900's. Your hotel is located on Goat Island, overlooking Newport and the lovely waters of Narragansett Bay. Meals BL

6. Explore Newport
Today is at leisure in Newport, perhaps joining your Tauck Director for a morning stroll along Newport's famous oceanfront Cliff Walk. Later on you'll visit "The Breakers," one of the most palatial estates in Newport; it was once the seaside summer "cottage" of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Most of the day is free to explore the galleries and shops along Thames Street and Bowen's Wharf. Join us for a farewell dinner this evening. Meals BD

7. Quincy / Journey Home
Journey from Newport back to Boston today via the Adams National Historical Park in the city of Quincy, where the story of five generations of the Adams family is told. Historic structures that lie amidst a cultural landscape include the homes of John Adams and John Quincy Adams, second and sixth presidents of the United States. Tour ends: Logan International Airport, Boston at 12:30 PM or the Sheraton Boston at 1:30 PM, traffic permitting. Allow a minimum of two hours for flight check-in. Meals B
