1. Arrive Jacksonville / Jekyll Island
Tour departs: Jacksonville (Florida) Airport at 3:00 PM.
Travel north to the Golden Isles of Georgia and Jekyll Island;
overnight at the elegant Jekyll Island Club. Founded in 1886 as an
exclusive retreat, today it is a restored Victorian-style hotel. Join
us this evening for a welcome reception and dinner. Meals D
2. St. Simons Island / Savannah
Through the years, ten-mile-long Jekyll Island has been home to Native
American Indians, Spanish missionaries, and even pirates – but the
island's most famous residents were a group of America's wealthiest
families who, in the early 1900's, were attracted to Jekyll's white
beaches and mild, semi-tropical climate. This morning, tour the
240-acre historical district with visits to Dubignon Cottage and
Rockefeller's Indian Mound, two of the island's famous mansions.
Travel to nearby St. Simons Island, where vast marshlands and
expansive oaks draped with Spanish moss create a peaceful atmosphere.
Continue to Savannah, one of the South's oldest and most graceful
cities; visit the renowned Savannah History Museum. Your hotel for the
next two nights is conveniently located in the heart of the city's
restored area. Meals BLD
3. Discover Savannah
Meet your Savannah guide for a city tour and a visit to the Ships of
the Sea Maritime Museum. You will also take a private tour of the
Owens-Thomas House and Museum, one of the finest examples of Regency
architecture in the United States. General James E. Oglethorpe created
a unique building plan for the city of Savannah centered around
twenty-four green squares – America's first geometrically designed
city. More than 1,000 historically and architecturally significant
buildings were restored in Savannah's historic area, making it the
largest landmark district of any city in the country; the city's
entire restored area is a registered National Historic Landmark. This
afternoon and evening are free; wander Savannah's waterfront where
19th-century cotton warehouses are now an assortment of craft and gift
shops, boutiques, taverns, art galleries and museums. Meals B
4. Fort Pulaski / Hilton Head
Visit Fort Pulaski National Monument, whose construction marked the
beginning of Robert E. Lee's military career and later played a
significant role in the Civil War. Continue to Hilton Head Island for
lunch and overnight. This beautiful island is bordered by one of the
few unspoiled marine estuaries on the eastern coast of the U.S., and
is the largest sea island between New Jersey and Florida. Arrive at
your hotel mid-afternoon; enjoy miles of beaches ideal for
beachcombing, featuring picturesque harbors. Meals BLD
5. Beaufort / Charleston
Take one more walk on Hilton Head's beautiful beach before continuing
along the coast to the colorful town of Beaufort, South Carolina.
Horse-drawn carriages are still the mode of transportation; use them
to visit this historic town, and explore before arriving in
Charleston, your home for the next three nights. The city's
extraordinary architecture is highlighted by a 789-acre historic
district preserved to showcase its 300-year history. Meals BD
6. Explore Charleston
Charleston has always been one of the country's most important seaport
towns. Begin your day with a city sightseeing tour that takes you
along old cobblestone streets by the harbor, by shaded courtyards, and
by walled gardens. The remainder of the afternoon is spent at your
leisure, pursuing what interests you most. You might choose to explore
the older section of the city, or visits to the Gibbes Museum of Art,
"The Old City Market," or Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began.

7. Plantations / Gardens
Within a few miles of Charleston, you'll visit three of the finest
17th- and 18th-century plantations and gardens. Cross the Ashley River
and travel on roads canopied by oaks draped with Spanish moss to
Drayton Hall, a plantation built in 1738. The house was never
modernized, and is an outstanding example of Georgian Palladian
architecture. Visit Magnolia Plantation and Gardens to walk along a
myriad of winding paths through one of the largest collections of
camellias and azaleas in America. Middleton Place is one of America's
oldest landscaped gardens and a masterpiece of formal gardens. Visit
the plantation stable yards, where you'll view 18th- and 19th-century
artifacts and craft exhibits, prior to returning to Charleston. Join
us for a farewell reception and dinner. Meals BLD
8. Journey Home
Tour ends: Charleston. Fly home anytime. Hotel check-out is
11:00 AM; allow a minimum of two hours for flight check-in. Since
persons depart at different times an airport transfer is not included.
