Welcome to one of the world's most beloved cities, San Francisco, where your legendary accommodation, The Fairmont San Francisco, is perched atop Nob Hill. Known from its early days as the "center jewel in the crown of the Golden Age of San Francisco," history was made here. The hotel saw many of the city's great 20th-century events; it has hosted every U.S. president since Taft; it was the setting for Arthur Hailey’s best-selling novel Hotel and the popular television series; Tony Bennett first sang the song I Left My Heart In San Francisco in the hotel’s former Venetian Room; and for decades it has been the choice hotel of royalty and international celebrities. We invite you to join us this evening for a welcome reception and dinner. Meals D 2. Explore San Francisco A sightseeing tour includes landmark sights and attractions such as famed Lombard Street, known as the "crookedest street in the world;" Fisherman’s Wharf; North Beach, noted for its 1950’s "beat" generation; Twin Peaks, where you’ll get a 360-degree view of San Francisco; the Civic Center; and a look at Victorian San Francisco to view the architectural styles of bygone days, including Victorian, Italianate and Queen Anne-style treasures. Remainder of the day is at leisure. Meals B 3. Nob Hill or Mission District A day of Personal Discovery choices begins with three possibilities: first is a walking tour of Nob Hill, the most luxurious neighborhood in the city during the 19th century, with a local guide who imparts the legends and secrets of "silver kings" and infamous "railroad barons." Or, you can discover the "artistic" side of the city with a guided tour of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, featuring 17,000 modern works ranging from American abstract expressionism to Fauvism. Alternatively, you can tour the colorful Mission District with a local guide – Mexican and Central American influences are seen in a myriad of specialty shops, restaurants and the "Mission Murals," where everyday life and ideology are artistically depicted on the sides of buildings. Everyone enjoys a dim sum lunch and cultural tour of Chinatown, followed by a visit to Alcatraz Island, one of the world’s most infamous maximum security federal penitentiaries where notorious criminals such as Al Capone were incarcerated. Spend the evening exploring San Francisco at your leisure. Meals BL 4.
