2. Cascades / Orchards
Journey along the Skykomish River into the Cascade Mountains, over
Stevens Pass; you will be amazed at how quickly the city turns to
wilderness. Descend the sunny eastern slopes of the Cascades to the
delightful Bavarian alpine village of Leavenworth. The high
surrounding peaks make you feel as if you are in the European Alps.
Travel to the sun belt of Washington, where apple and peach
orchards blanket the rolling countryside. This is coulee country, a
network of waterways, sluices and dams along the Columbia River that
provides one of the largest hydroelectric power sources in the world.
Follow the Columbia River past Lake Chelan into cowboy, cattle and
horse country. Arrive at Sun Mountain Lodge for a leisurely two-night
stay at this beautiful resort. Meals BD
3. Sun Mountain Lodge
Meet the famed "Smokejumpers" this morning, an elite group of
specialists who are considered the most highly skilled wildland fire
fighters in the U.S. Sun Mountain Lodge is a remote and rustic
ranch-style hotel in a delightful hilltop setting. Enjoy the afternoon
hiking or riding the area's many trails, lounge by the pool or visit
nearby Winthrop, an old-style western town. Meals BD
4. North Cascades / La Conner
View some of America's highest peaks in the Cascades - green and
white, with emerald mountain streams, lakes and dark-green cedars
silhouetted against the snow-capped pinnacles. This unheralded part of
America rivals the world's most spectacular wilderness areas. Traverse
the North Cascades and see Skagit, a power project including three
lakes, three dams and three power plants that light the city of
Seattle. Visit La Conner, a 19th-century Victorian fishing village
featuring arts, crafts and unique shops. Arrive at the Inn at
Semi-Ah-Moo, an elegant waterfront resort where your accommodations
are nestled within manicured gardens. Meals BD
5. San Juan Islands
A ferry journey enables you to view the lovely San Juan Islands,
refuge to many endangered wildlife species including the bald eagle.
Your final destination is Victoria, where you arrive at the Inner
Harbor. Visit colorful Butchart Gardens en route to The Fairmont
Empress, the city's landmark harborside hotel. Spend the evening at
your leisure exploring the gracious charms of Victoria. Meals

The location of The Fairmont Empress makes it a perfect base from
which to explore. Meander along sidewalks decorated with street-lamps
laden with flowers, or relax amidst the regal Victorian atmosphere of
the hotel. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia; visit the
nearby Parliament building and the Royal British Columbia Museum,
displaying the province's cultural and natural history. Late
afternoon, board a modern ferry-steamer that follows the "route of the
gulls" past the rocky shores of forested isles to Vancouver. Meals
